Certain crafts like gunsmith bench require a chest. However, you will no longer be able to craft a chest, as there's only a small box blueprint in the list of recipes. Craft a small box, place it on the ground, upgrade it to a chest and put it back to your inventory. After that you can either use it in some crafting recipe or take advantage of its increased capacity (with further improvements - of the increased capacity of each individual cell).
