A character who has died will not ascend to Valhalla, but rather return to the world of humans and his own base, with empty inventory and without the equipment he had at the moment of his death. You can try to come back to your dead body to pick up all the valuable stuff. However if your corpse lies at a distant location, it can be already robbed by the time you get there, and the body will disappear.
